The idea

Nurbanu is an architecture practice I invented. The brand and the site were built as a template to sell, then kept as a portfolio piece when that didn't happen.

Working without a client is a particular kind of freedom and a particular kind of trap. Nothing gets watered down, and nothing pushes back either. The discipline has to come from the brief you set yourself.

The Nurbanu website

An N drawn the way an architect draws

The monogram is an N built from a quarter-circle arc, its counter formed by nested arcs, so the letter reads as an arch and a floor plan at the same time.

It is constructed on two grids at once, rectilinear and polar, which are the two systems an architect actually works in.

A whole site, not a hero shot

Most concept work stops at a home page. Nurbanu has an about page, services, a projects index with individual project pages, a blog and a contact page, because the hard part of designing a site is the fifth page, not the first.

Type carries it: a wide grotesk set very large, black on white, with the photography holding all the colour. Reveals and page transitions run as wipes rather than fades.
